‘Hillbilly Elegy’ movie review: Glenn Close shines in this drab Oscar-bait

By deciding to do away with the politics, director Ron Howard has created a bland and rootless movie

Talking of the reason for excising the politics out of his latest film, Hillbilly Elegy, based on J.D. Vance’s eponymous 2016 memoir, director Ron Howard has said the movie should not be looked at through the political lens. And instead of looking at the story of the Vances as particular to Ohio or Kentucky, Howard says it should be looked at as a universal family story.

Vance’s memoir, a New York Times bestseller, with its controversial readings of the reason for the Appalachian region swing to vote Republican has been called provocative and many other things. By deciding to do away with the politics, Howard has created a bland, rootless movie.

Hillbilly Elegy

  • Director: Ron Howard
  • Cast: Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Gabriel Basso, Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, Bo Hopkins
  • Story line: A family crisis brings a Yale student back home to relook his tough growing up
  • Run time: 115 minutes

That Hillbilly Elegy is so obviously Oscar bait is even more depressing. We know JD made it in the beginning of the movie itself, when he goes for a dinner interview for an internship with horrible, rich people. He panic calls his girlfriend, Usha, to ask her about forks and just as he figures out the cutlery, he gets a call from his sister, Lindsay, saying his mum is in hospital for a heroin overdose. The movie goes back to JD’s growing up years, as his mother, Bev, a nurse, moved from one failed relationship to another, dragging JD and his sister through a succession of homes, all the while struggling with addiction.

It is JD’s grandmother, Mamaw, who pushes him to study hard to get an out from his dead-end life in Ohio. The only thing that elevates this movie from its predictable, vanilla lines is the performances. Glenn Close as Mamaw is incandescent, whether it is saying “Hasta La Vista, Baby” along with the Terminator in Judgement Day, having watched it many times, or giving JD life lessons, she lights up the screen. Amy Adams as the tragically flawed Beverly is good in a showy sort of way. Freida Pinto as Usha is serene, while Gabriel Basso brings stolidity to his JD.

Glenn Close is the only reason to watch this predictable movie.

Hillbilly Elegy is currently streaming on Netflix

Fitrat Lyrics

Kya kahun tumhein tum meri ho
Tum meri ho tum meri ho
Ik pal bhi tum door jaate ho
Dar lagne lagta hai humko

Kabhi kabhi sochta hoon
Ke main tumko
Meri baahon mein bhar loon
Hamesha ke liye

Meri fitrat badal rahi
Meri hasrat badal rahi
Meri rooh mein hai tu kya karun

Meri fitrat badal rahi
Meri hasrat badal rahi
Meri rooh mein hai tu kya karun
Kya karun

Khoya rehta hoon main
Khoya rehta hoon main
Tujhmein hi har dafa

Khoya rehta hoon main
Khoya rehta hoon main
Tujhmein hi har dafa

Teri hi baaton mein khayalon mein
Main uljha rehta hoon
Karta rehta hoon main
Khud se hi sawal

Ke laut aaoge ghar pe phir se
Aaoge seene se lagaoge humko dil se
Haan apna banaoge
Humse kabhi na jaoge door

Ke laut aaoge ghar pe phir se
Ke laut aaoge ghar pe phir se
Ke apna banaoge phir se
Ke apna banaoge

Satya Lyrics

You know who the f**k it is haan
Divine haan
Gully gang haan
Tum log chill karenge
Apun drill karenge aah

Achche se baat kar
Chhote achche se baat kar

Chulhe mein chingari
Sar pe hai chhat
Badan pe kapde tab zindagi mast
Sab samundar par se bolein wassup
DM mein ladkiyan likhti hain khat

Gully gang chhaati thok ke
Tu Suraj Pancholi
Main Chandra Bose hai
Shanti failana hum mantra bolte
Tu ro dega agar apun santra khol dein

Patra tod ke nikle ISRO ki tarah
Chhaap ke nahi kahin dusron ki tarah
Vastav hai kala meri lifestyle ki tarah
Rolly range hoon main chakri ki tarah

Nange pair hoon jo signal pe khada
Shivaji Rajya se swagat pe maza
Badalon ke upar mera swag apsara
Spicy hai sab
Sirf chocolate hai color haan

Goli maar bheje mein
Bheja shor karta hai
Poore desh bhar mein charcha hai
Jo bole apun karta hai

Goli maar bheje mein
Bheja shor karta hai
Poore desh bhar mein charcha hai
Jo bole apun karta hai

Sir ka ladka karta dharta
Saat ko lekar main sath mein chalta
Hum bahar jab niklein kuchh karna padta
15 peti mere show ka lagta
30 peti mere verse ka lagta
Topi nikalein to Church Ka ladka
Topi pehna dein phir karte lafda
Load nahi lete apun duniya bhar ka

Nange pair se seedha lounge mein chair
Paper ke pakad mein duniya bhel
Chase karte hum sirf Gandhi ko
Ladkiyan fail badhiyan mel
Matlab saat figure deal

Khud mein ek brand to kyun karun free
Zaraurat nahi wahan bante nahi G
Bandana bandana gang
59 Bombay se bhi

Goli maar bheje mein
Bheja shor karta hai
Poore desh bhar mein charcha hai
Jo bole apun karta hai

Goli maar bheje mein
Bheja shor karta hai
Poore desh bhar mein charcha hai
Jo bole apun karta hai

Jhoom jhoom jhoom
Mera bhai ha ha
Jhoom jhoom mera bhai
Jhoom jhoom mera bhai

Sandalwood drugs case: SC notice on Ragini Dwivedi plea

Ragini Dwivedi

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice on a plea moved by Kannada film actress Ragini Dwivedi seeking bail in the Sandalwood drugs case. The actress has highlighted that she has been in jail for 90 days without any authentic proof or recovery from her. A bench headed by Justice R.F. Nariman and comprising Justices Navin Sinha and K.M. Joseph sought response from the Karnataka government on Ragini’s plea.

The plea filed through advocate-on-record Sahil Bhalaik said the prosecution has concocted a false case against her to attract public attention. The plea argued that it is remarkable that Ragini has been made an accused and remains in jail even after 90 days, despite that fact that there has been no recovery of any drugs from her. The plea added that only on the basis of a false statement extracted by the police she has been implicated and became a victim of a media trial.

Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, representing Ragini, submitted before the bench that no recovery was made from her and the entire case is based on a statement made by a co-accused before the police. The Supreme Court has listed the matter for further hearing in the first week of January

Dwivedi filed a special leave petition in the top court challenging the November 3 order of the Karnataka High Court, which declined to grant her relief along with another accused Sanjjanaa Galrani in the case.

The two actors were arrested by the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch Police in swift actions in September at the height drug related accusations among members of film fraternity.

Ragini was arrested on September 4 and Sanjana on September 8 under various provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly consuming and supplying banned drugs at parties and events organised in the city over the last couple of years.

All the accused are lodged in the central jail on the outskirts of the city’s southern suburb.

On September 28, the trial court had dismissed their bail applications on the grounds they could influence the other accused and hamper investigation into the drugs scam.

The special NDPS court had also refused to grant bail to both the actors on the same day (September 28).

The city police began a crackdown on the use of banned drugs in the Sandalwood industry in August last week after noted Kannada film producer Inderjit Lankesh alleged that about a dozen actors were involved in drugs consumption and there was a nexus between them and drug mafias.

Besides Ragini and Sanjana, 20 drugs peddlers, party organizers and their associates were arrested and jailed pending the investigation.

Mika Singh questions Kangana Ranaut’s ‘desh bhakti’ on Twitter, says ‘aap acting karo na yaar’ – Times of India

After Kangana Ranaut reacted to multiple legal actions being taken against her, Mika Singh took to his Twitter account to take a dig at the ‘Queen’ actress once again. Questioning Kangana, he wrote, “Par beta aapka target Kya hai ye tau samajh aaye, you are a talented beautiful girl aap acting karo na yar .. suddenly itni desh bhagti wo bhi twitter and news pe..”

See tweet here:

Previously, the singer had asked Kangana to apologise for her tweet where she had allegedly misidentified an elderly Sikh woman joining the ongoing farmers’ protest in the capital city, as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh. Singh’s tweet read, “I used to have immense respect for @Kanganateam , I even tweeted in support when her office was demolished. I now think I was wrong, Kangana being a woman you should show the old lady some respect. If you have any etiquette then apologise. Shame on you…”

While Kangana has now deleted the alleged tweet, it sparked a heated online feud between her and Diljit Dosanjh on Thursday.

Soon after this Kangana shared multiple tweets to check the misconceptions that led to the online war and added, “I am with farmers, last year I activity promoted agroforestry and donated for the cause as well, I have been vocal about farmers exploitation and their problems also I worry a lot so prayed for resolves in this sector, which finally happened with this revolutionary bill.”
