Samyuktha Karthik: ‘The backlash to my Bigg Boss stint isn’t justified at all’

The model-actor who was eliminated from the Tamil reality show recently, talks about why she feels Ramya Pandian is the front-runner to win this season

Samyuktha Karthik speaks to The Hindu about her tiff with Aari Arjuna, being a working mother in the industry and the experience of being in the Bigg Boss Tamil house during a pandemic and a cyclone. Excerpts from an interview:

How did it feel going into the Bigg Boss house during a pandemic? From one lockdown to another?

It was like a vacation you couldn’t take in the outside world. Definitely, a different experience owing to this particular year. Since we’ve already been in lockdown, to move into a house like that didn’t feel that claustrophobic because you are used to being confined to one particular space.

What was your purpose of participating in the reality show?

I have been modelling for quite some time now, but I felt like I had never done anything in mainstream media all these years. This was my one shot at it.

On top of that, you were stuck there in the middle of a cyclone. How was that experience?

When we were inside the house, we didn’t know the implication of the cyclone. But when they said they were going to evacuate us out for a night and bring us back, that kind of struck an alarm. We felt we were safe inside the house, but if they were going to stop an entire day’s shoot and take so much effort, we thought the situation outside was probably really, really bad. So we all started panicking about our families, but they kept reassuring us that they had been in touch with them and everybody was safe.

If you had the Topple card in your hand, who would you have sent to the nominations instead of you?

Anita. I find her personality the most deviant from everybody else in terms of her moods, being sportive and so on.

You were quite popular with the people within the house, what do you think went wrong?

Obviously when you’re inside, you don’t even realise it. Now I feel that it is probably because certain words that I used inside the house got misconstrued and blown out of proportion. Way more offensive words have been used inside that house and none of them were highlighted.

I’m getting enormous amounts of love, but there is a lot of backlash also which I don’t feel is justified at all.

Samyuktha Karthik: ‘The backlash to my Bigg Boss stint isn’t justified at all’

Can you speak to us about your tiff with Aari?

The basis of our tiff was Sanam and Bala’s earlier argument. When he (Aari) yelled at me using the word ‘dubakur’ during the court argument, things got a little agitated. It went to an extent when things started becoming all about personal attacks which everybody got offended by. I don’t know why what I murmur — when I was so hurt — became such a big deal.

Who would you have called in the ‘Bigg Boss Call Centre’ task if you had continued your sojourn in the house?

I wanted my call to be for Nisha! I just wanted to play around with her and do some comic stuff.

If Nisha had already chosen by somebody else, then I’d probably have spoken to Sanam. The previous day, I was in a very sassy mode, so I would have explained to her about things in a more neutral tone.

How hard is it to thrive in the entertainment industry as a working mother?

It is hard, but thankfully I have a great support system. My mother is always there to support me. Because of my support system I am able to do how much ever I do.

What would you want your son Rayan to learn from your journey in the Bigg Boss house?

He is probably not going to relate to any of what is happening now. When he grows up, I would like him to believe that I stood up for myself and atleast tried to create an identity for myself.

Usually, with motherhood, which is a full-time job, you cannot afford to do anything else. You don’y have the mental bandwidth, and even if you do, then the practicality of the entire thing comes into question.

Despite all the challenges, I have tried to do things that I have been passionate about, while balancing the entire motherhood experience and keeping that as a priority. I would like him to be proud of that fact.

Who do you think in the house is most capable of winning?

I think Ramya is the most capable of winning because she is aware of the game. She is playing it smart, and most importantly, is playing it very fair.

Would you go back to the Bigg Boss house if asked?

I don’t think so. I’d like to just meet up with the people that I have spent time with there, but I don’t think I want to go back.

Samyuktha with Kamal Haasan on the show

Samyuktha with Kamal Haasan on the show

Who is the one person you wouldn’t want to meet up with after the show?

That would definitely be Anita. Personally,I think she is a very talented girl… the way she speaks, her grasp of the language, the points that she puts forward. In fact, in that sumangali  issue, Shivani and I were the only girls who supported her. We told her what she did was a great thing and that it was a fantastic platform.

However, she is always finding fault with others. Such a talented person having such a negative approach to life is something that I saw first-hand and don’t approve of.

Karthik Subbaraj: ‘Triples’ is a tribute to Crazy Mohan

Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj says that the Jai and Vani Bhojan-starrer show, which he has produced, has been penned to match the late playwright’s style of comedy

It started with Amazon Prime’s Putham Pudhu Kaalai. Then, Netflix followed suit with Paava Kadhaigal, releasing in a couple of weeks. With Disney+ Hotstar too announcing a series of titles, it appears that Tamil cinema’s who’s who are embracing OTT platforms with open arms.

Triples, a comedy series produced by filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj’s production firm Stone Bench, is next up for release on Disney+ Hotstar on December 11.

Starring Jai, Vani Bhojan, Vivek Prasanna, Rajkumar and Madhuri, the series, directed by Charukesh Sekar, has already caught the attention of netizens with its witty one-liners and situational comedy, as seen in a trailer that was released recently.

In a virtual press meet to release a song from the show titled ‘Nee En Kannadi’, Karthik Subbaraj drew parallels with the late Crazy Mohan’s writings to explain the show’s comedy quotient.

Jai and Vani Bhojan in ‘Triples’

“Growing up, we have all been fans of Crazy Mohan sir. This show is a dedication to him and his style of writing,” says Karthik, adding, “When I was pitched the idea, I thought it was funny and interesting because it had good humour and romance quotient as well.”

Two characters in the show — that of Vivek Prasanna’s and Rajkumar’s — have been named Madhu and Cheenu, a reference to Crazy Mohan’s theatre sketches.

“The two characters are iconic creations of Crazy Mohan. When the show’s writer (Balaji) narrated these characters to me, I was sold. The show plays out like a comedy of errors and has lots of wordplay, just like in the style of Crazy Mohan,” says the show’s director Charukesh.

Karthik pitches in: “It has the qualities of a clean comedy… the serious situations the actors in the show face will appear funny to us. The story will play out like it is chaotic situation unfolding for the actors.”

Jai, who marks his debut on streaming platforms with this project, says that Stone Bench left no stone unturned in terms of production value. “I have heard that usually web series are shot on a tight budget. I had no such feeling with Triples. It felt like I was shooting for a film,” he says.

Lights, Camera, Action, Mask On – Bollywood gets back to business with a bang! – Times of India

0

Decked in PPE kits and armed with safety precautions – Bollywood has got back to business and how! From shooting in exotic locations to setting up bio-bubble environments and following all the safety precautions – actors, directors, producers, technicians and the entire crew that brings a movie together is actively working towards churning out entertainment. B-town is determined to keep the ball rolling and indirectly boost the pandemic-hit economy too.
From stepping behind-the-scene of latest shoots to safety preps and first-hand accounts from technicians, actors, directors and producers – take a look at how Bollywood is resurrecting and taking the risk to keep the dice rolling in the new normal!

“Want to give the audiences the entertainment they have been starved off”
As soon as lockdown norms were eased, director Milap Zaveri rounded the team of ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’ and took off to Lucknow for the film’s shoot. Adopting the new shoot protocols, the filmmaker reveals that everyone is maintaining social distancing when not shooting and constant sanitization takes place on the sets. He says, “It’s very different in the sense that we have to follow each and every safety protocol with utmost sincerity and care. Have to always wear masks. Sanitise constantly. On set everything is sanitised from the equipment to the props. We maintain physical distance from each other while not in the shot. But I don’t see these as challenges. I see them as the new normal and it’s our duty to work like this henceforth to ensure the safety of the crew. So in a way it’s a sense of responsibility that the entire unit develops.” Despite all the extra efforts, Milap Zaveri is enjoying shooting for the action entertainer, which is being readied for release in 2021. “It’s still exciting and fun to be on set and make a film! I’m very excited to finish the shoot of ‘SMJ2’. Touchwood this time the film has twice the action,
dialoguebaazi, heroism and thrills compared to part 1! Looking forward to releasing it next Eid and giving the audiences the entertainment they have been starved off!”

‘Every time I enter the set, one person would sanitise me and my bags’
After a
big debut opposite Salman Khan in ‘Dabangg 3’, Saiee Manjrekar went on to sign up for a pivotal role in ‘Major’, helmed by Sashi Kiran Tikka. After being at home for more than a year because of the pandemic, Saiee was relieved to return to work but reveals that a feeling of fear looms large on the sets. “After eight months of being at home, going to work was one of the most relieving feelings in the world. But at the same time, there were so many things about going to work that had changed, the most important one being how everyone at every point in time was wearing a mask. There was this one person who was sanitising everything. Sanitisers were being distributed on the set. The main change that came about was in everyone’s mentality. On a normal shoot day, people wouldn’t be worried about touching anything, picking up a cup of chai or giving someone a high five. But after the lockdown, people have this thought at the back of their minds to be careful, not touch anything if they don’t have to and sanitise their hands frequently. There’s a little bit of fear that has set in but this is the new normal and we’ve to live with it.” Sharing a first-hand account of her shoot experience in Hyderabad, Saiee revealed, “Every time I enter the set, there will be this one person who will be sanitising me and my bags and take down my temperature and these are the things that are being done for everyone who enters the set. This is very important, especially at a time like this, because a set entails a huge working environment where there’s a larger crowd than at a normal office. It’s very important for us to be safe because even if one person falls ill or is down with Covid-19, it could impact the whole crew.”

‘Bell Bottom’ team shot with a dedicated paramedic on the set and had constant checks for oxygen level and temperature
Pandemic or no pandemic, Akshay Kumar is addicted to work and that’s what he did throughout lockdown and hit the sets of a new film as soon as opportunity presented. Without wasting any time Khiladi Kumar jetted off to Scotland to shoot for his vintage style classic spy thriller ‘Bell Bottom’. How does one achieve this you ask? Producer Jackky Bhagnani told ETimes, “It was very tough as the film was to be shot during the pandemic. But we took all the precautions – there was a paramedic 24×7 on the set, constant monitoring of blood level, temperature, oxygen levels etc for everyone along with maintaining social distancing norms. Our shoot began only after everyone was tested negative for COVID-19. Even in Glasgow, the whole team’s COVID test was done every week during the entire stay of shoot. The team had a separate cook, and even local team stayed at the hotel rather than their homes which kept it all safe and smooth, the entire course. I am extremely grateful for the support from the whole team.” ‘Bell Bottom’ is the first film in the world to have started and completed its shoot during the pandemic.

“Precaution is the only real cure right now”
Salman Khan, who stayed away from Mumbai for months during lockdown, returned to face the camera with great enthusiasm. The actor is not just shooting for his TV show, but also resumed work on his next biggie ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’, after nearly seven months. Atul Agnihotri, who is a co-producer on the venture, told ETimes, “It’s wonderful, work is slowly getting back to normal. Precaution is the only real cure right now and thankfully all the new safety norms are working well.” A dedicated medical team was reportedly present on the sets all the time as the crew of ‘Radhe’ ensured all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) advised by the government were being followed.

Atul Agnihotri

Anees Bazmee had been shooting for Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani starrer ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ in Lucknow earlier this year. He wrapped the schedule in March, just when the health scare hit India and the lockdown was announced. Excited to return to sets this month the filmmaker shared, “I am a very optimistic person and I don’t think anything beyond films, it is my passion. Once the industry gets into action, we can also start shooting. I am hopeful that the earlier we start working, the better but there are difficulties. We cannot survive without it. We will keep the rules and regulations in mind and start shooting. On our last shoot there were around 400 people but now we will have to stick to a minimum number. To call fewer people, we have the reason that it is not our decision but the government’s rule.” Kartik and Kiara will be shooting for ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ in Mumbai and Lucknow, confirmed Anees Bazmee.

Shah Rukh Khan, who didn’t announce or commence his next venture for two years, finally started shooting amidst the pandemic. His action entertainer ‘Pathan’, which is directed by Siddharth Anand’, went on floors recently. SRK sports long locks for the film and will reunite with Deepika Padukone as his leading lady. Taapsee Pannu also wrapped a schedule of her next film ‘Rashmi Rocket’ and had shared several glimpse from the race track as she prepped for her role of an athlete.

‘I used to get tested once in 2 weeks and that could be a bit annoying’
It is after a long gap that Divya Khosla Kumar returns to face the camera as a leading lady with ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’. Describing her shoot experience Divya shares, “It was quite a different feeling shooting during the pandemic, and sometimes the safety measures could be a bit annoying. I used to get tested once in 2 weeks and that could be a bit tedious but I’d rather be safe than sorry. You also have to constantly be on your guard and be mindful about washing hands, sanitizing and social distancing. And there is a bit of fear as well. I’ve been wearing the mask at all times and only taking it off for my shot. My staff, the hair and makeup crew and rest of the people on set are also constantly tested.”

Taking the new normal in her stride, Divya also celebrated her birthday on the sets with her team. “It was extremely safe as we had all been constantly getting tested. All of us were together, John Abraham, Milap Zaveri, and it was a wonderful experience to cut the cake with my whole cast and crew. They say that if you work on your birthday you end up working throughout the year and that’s great for me as I am a workaholic.” Divya recounted that around 30 people in her office had tested positive for the virus but soon recovered after the mild bout.

And it is not just the actors, producers and directors who are up in arms against the novel virus, but technicians, stylists, choreographers and make-up artists are also adopting new ways. Popular make-up artist Pompy Hans started working two months back and has adapted to the new normal of PPE kits and constant Covid tests. He told ETimes, “We are wearing a mask and PPE suits all the time. We are also cleaning our hands and doing the Covid test one day before every shoot. Since I work in such close proximity with the actresses, I have to do the test. Mostly I am working with Kareena and she is pregnant, so I am taking a lot of precaution. This is the new normal and it has settled in the mind. It is a little extra but now I am used to it.”

Tara Sutaria’s stylist Meagan Concessio expresses that while it was a bit difficult to start work post the lockdown, she has got used to working with a smaller team and has realized that she can independently wrap up a lot of work. “It was initially a bit scary but I am happy to do the tests so that you know that everybody is safe. I have done like over 10-12 tests, it is uncomfortable but when you look at the bigger picture it is a necessity. I couldn’t have a big team like I am used to working, but I realized that smaller teams, lesser access makes you work harder and think of more efficient ways to do things,” shares Meagan.

And while Bollywood movies have gone on floors with a lot of gung-ho, shooting those oh-so-glamorous songs is still distant. Coordinator for background dancers Raj Surani shares, “
Big movies have gone on floors but the songs will be shot only later, probably when the vaccine is here. I am working on ‘Brahmastra’ but the film’s song will only be shot next year. Otherwise we are mostly working on albums. I am shooting in Mumbai for an album with Tiger Shroff and Badshah. We have only called around 15-20 dancers and they have to compulsorily do a Covid test. Once they have tested negative, we begin with the rehearsals.”

Bollywood is determined to entertain fans in a
big way in 2021, hoping to make up to the audience for all that was missed in 2020. Come January and entertainment will be rolled out on the
big screen, from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Bell Bottom’ to Salman Khan’s ‘Radhe’ and Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathan’ – next year holds a lot of hope for moviemakers and film enthusiasts.

‘Tenet’ actor Elizabeth Debicki insists the film deserves nothing less than a theatrical release

In an exclusive interview, Elizabeth Debicki recalls how shooting ‘Tenet’ demanded both emotional and physical investments for her central role, while also explaining why Christopher Nolan is a masterful storyteller

Tenet is truly a ‘Nolan baby’ inside-out, more so than his other reality-bending films such as Memento, The Prestige, and Inception. But time wound up for the film’s release, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Having been released in the United States and the United Kingdom in September, the IMAX-shot film is now running in theatres across India.

The film stars Aussie actor Elizabeth Debicki (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) as Kat, an expert in art curation and restoration who becomes integral to the Protagonist (John David Washington) and Neil’s (Robert Pattinson) mission to save the world from an apocalyptic temporal war, enforced by Russian oligarch Sator (Kenneth Branagh).

Theatrical value

Elizabeth’s scenes were shot in various parts of the world including Estonia, Vietnam and London, but she missed out on shooting in Mumbai. She still says, over a call from her home in Australia, that “Tenet having a release in India warmed my heart because I’m so proud of this film. When Chris [Nolan] and Warner Brothers said they would release it this year, I remember thinking this is exactly what people need right now because Tenet is wonderful cinema and escapism, in a meta way. It has made me more aware of what cinema can do for people, in a time of ‘drought’ and how cinema can be a pocket of its own time, funnily enough.”

ELIZABETH DEBICKI and KENNETH BRANAGH in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action epic "TENET," a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

The announcement of Tenet having a theatrical release surprised the entertainment world, but those close to Nolan know of his tenacity. The 30-year-old, aware of the pandemic-induced restrictions experienced by the theatre and entertainment industries, sees it both ways. “[The theatrical release decision] reinforced something I know about Chris,” she elaborates, “in that he is a remarkable, auteur filmmaker who exists, in my opinion, in his own space.”

She also commends Nolan’s and Emma Thomas’ (Tenet’s producer and Nolan’s wife) dedication to and love for the art form as being “so pure and real,” adding, “They will be the ones who constantly go to the cinema and understand that Tenet is to be watched on a big screen and communally, with the sound and the colour. He understood that, even though we are in difficult times en global masse, if there was a way for people to go safely and still have cinema feed their souls, he would encourage that. I respected that approach, because the need for people to go into these spaces and experience theatre and film, is vital to us as a species. It’s bolstering that we have that need ingrained in us in the arts.”

ELIZABETH DEBICKI in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action epic "TENET," a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

A particularly jarring scene where time, entropy and quantum physics are tested sees actor Elizabeth with her hands tied behind her back and fear glinting in her eyes, confined to the back seat of a speeding SUV. It gets worse: the vehicle has no driver, and it’s hurtling down a busy highway backwards, owing to the inversion of time. So, everything she battles within the confined space fights back. Playing Kat, the six-foot-plus Elizabeth stretches herself along the inside of the car to unlock the door so she can escape. Talk about making the most of ‘actor real estate’, it is a scene she recalls with utmost pride and exhilaration. Clearly, the theatre-trained actor is drawn to roles with equal measures of allure and grit, and Tenet’s Kat is no exception.

When Tenet entered pre-production in 2018, the world got to know, headline by headline, how collaborative the film was going to be; alongside a diverse cast, were cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (Interstellar, Dunkirk), composer Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther, Creed I and II), production designer Nathan Crowley (Dunkirk, The Prestige), and sound designer Richard King (Inception, The Dark Knight), to name a few. These combined efforts channelled into Nolan’s mind-bending vision for the film culminated in memorable action sequences and deeply disconcerting dialogue scenes.

Behind the script

  • The mystery behind Tenet over the past two years is remarkable, like something out of a covert operations file. The story had long been on director Christopher Nolan’s mind — 20 years to be precise — and the script began to take physical shape back in 2014. To perfect the interpretations of the time and science within the film, Nolan brought on theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, who worked with Nolan on Interstellar to consult.
  • In past interviews, Elizabeth Debicki recalls her casting experience, which saw her being flown to Los Angeles to read the script in a locked room with no phones allowed.

Elizabeth agrees, laughing, “Words are my thing! The way Chris runs his set and directs, is whatever the scale of a given scene, each frame has the same blueprint. It’s all ‘fundamentally Chris’ as a masterful storyteller, and even with Hoyte, it’s all about singular focus, whether it’s someone’s hand reaching for something or a plane flying into a building. Each iota that is being captured on film, is as important as the next. I’ve never experienced that before, and even speaking to you now, I grapple with how he does that! It’s important to Chris that you understand. As an actor, this is very freeing, because you feel held by the atmosphere, and by the way, Chris and Hoyte know that everything you give to the camera is being captured, held and kneaded, and everything is as finely-tuned as a machine. Nothing is dropped to the wayside, everything is very specific.”

‘Very harrowing’

For Elizabeth, Tenet didn’t just entail physically demanding work, but also that of the emotional variety too; Kat’s relationship with Sator comprises a great deal of fear but she insists her character is far from a damsel in distress. “The grounds that [Kenneth Branagh] and I covered emotionally with those two roles were very dark. It was, at times, very harrowing,” she comments, “With that kind of material, once you understand what you need to say with the scene and what the scene creates for your character to become this psychological portrait on screen, you surrender to it. Playing Kat, I understood the harrowing scenes are important to show the audience the threats to her existence — physical and psychological — she faced. We had to push those in the direction we did because when we watched her crawl out of that very dark place and begin to free herself, we had to understand how profound the psychological prison was at the start.”

ELIZABETH DEBICKI and KENNETH BRANAGH in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action epic "TENET," a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

She starts laughing as she adds, “It sounds like such a basic thing, but it was important that Ken and I really liked each other as people, and we both have a quirky sense of humour, so we were able to give each other a lot of life and support, and add levity to the shooting experience. Finding time to laugh helped a lot.”

Regarding future projects ahead, the 30-year-old is looking at a diverse range of moods, not just laughs. Her two biggest upcoming roles include the late Lady Diana, Princess of Wales in Netflix’s The Crown’s seasons five and six, and Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign gold-dipped alien people in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
