Paranormal Movie Locations in Wellington
‘Wellington Paranormal’ was filmed in its entirety in New Zealand, mainly in the capital Wellington. Because the early cult classic is set in the city of Wellington, the production unit chose to bring the entire production to the New Zealand city, in order to live up to the series’ title. Also known as Paradise of the Pacific, the island country offers ideal conditions for filming, thanks to the region’s sheer natural diversity and the tax benefits promoted by the government. Now let’s take you to the specific locations where the show was filmed!
Wellington, New Zealand
Most of the show was filmed in and around the city of Wellington, located in the southernmost region of New Zealand’s North Island. In an extensive production schedule, the crew filmed in as many as 100 locations around the city, with most locations near the production hub.
A significant portion of the filming was done at Avalon Studios, a large film studio at 41 Percy Cameron Street in Avalon in the Lower Hutt region, about 10 miles (10 km) northeast of the capital. Aside from some other scenes, the location also serves as the police station in the series.
Before filming, the production team visited a number of iconic locations in and around the city, including Mount Victoria Tunnel, a major connecting tunnel on State Highway 1 under the titular mountain in the city. In local slang, the location is touted as the “toe tunnel” due to the frequent horn blowing of the commuters.
Most of the story takes place along the enchanting stretch of Cuba Street, the city’s most colorful and culturally vibrant street. In the pilot episode of the first season, a sculpture acts as a gateway to the underworld full of hideous creatures. The scene was filmed at the Bucket Fountain, a historic landmark outside the Cuba Mall in the city’s Te Aro suburb. Another scene was filmed at Hotel Bristol, a bar at 131-133 Cuba Street in the same neighborhood.
In a series in the third episode of the first season, the police respond to a jamming call to meet a bunch of partying ghosts. The scene was filmed in Khandallah, a suburban enclave in the city. The pilot of the second season catches a glimpse of the Wellington Harbor, a large natural harbor in the city.
The crew also visited Outlet City, a shopping mall at 24 Main Road, in the Tawa neighborhood, to film the special Christmas episode of the second season. Additional scenes were filmed at Wellington Hospital, the historic Karori Cemetery and Pencarrow Heads in Wairarapa.
